Larry Martin


Mr. Martin, an Amarillo native, earned a B.A. in Classics and English as well as an M.A. in Secondary Education from Austin College. He comes to Ascension from Van Alstyne High School in Van Alstyne, Texas, during which time he served as Chair of both the English and Foreign Language departments. During his time there, he was named Teacher of the Year for Van Alstyne High School four times and was named Teacher of the Year for the Van Alstyne Independent School District in both 1995 and 2000. He has taught Latin I through AP Latin IV as well as AP English III and IV. Prior to that, he taught English, Latin, and Humanities at the Glenwood School in Richardson, TX

Mr. Martin received a Fulbright Fellowship for Classical Studies at the American Academy in Rome in 1996 and was honored with the Summa Cum Laude Master Teacher Award from the National Junior Classical League in 2002. He has served three times as a reader for the Advanced Placement Latin examination offered by the College Board. In 1999 and 2005 he attended workshops and seminars offered through the National Endowment for the Humanities. He served as State Chair for the Texas State Junior Classical League from 1999 to 2008. He enjoys having too many books, too many guitars, and a motorcycle - all passions he shares with his wife.
